When in doubt, get a second opinion.

They say that getting a second opinion from the doctor is often wise, and the same is true with your mechanic. Some problems with your car or truck are quite inexpensive and easy to fix, while others can be prohibitively expensive. Not every mechanic approaches a solution from the same direction and not every mechanic takes your budget and financial solution into account. Any time you are facing repair costs that are uncomfortable, you should always get a second opinion from a licensed mechanic shop to verify that the proposed repair is the correct one and that the costs involved are reasonable.

Of course, mechanic shops are in business to make a profit, but that doesn't mean that someone should be able to afford to send their kid to Harvard from the money they make off of replacing the alternator on your Hyundai.
